Synopsis:
One day, while compiling the state history, historians debated how the relationship between Princess Danyang and her Prince Consort—who is also the current Prime Minister, Yan Shang—first began. When the court historians sought input from the Princess’s manor, the Princess sneered, "Between him and me, in the beginning, it was nothing more than a relationship of 'the inferior offending the superior' and 'the superior bullying the inferior'."
The Prime Minister smiled gently and countered, "There is no need to record those words in the state history." He then reminisced, "In the beginning..."
In the beginning, after Princess Danyang (Mu Wanyao) lost her former husband, she traveled to Lingnan to recuperate and stayed at the estate of a local gentry family. During a period of endless, pouring twilight rain, the Princess was awakened by the sound of someone reading aloud. She drew back her bed curtains and spotted a handsome youth studying diligently beneath the window. In the misty rain, the youth’s brows looked as expansive as distant mountains. Left dazed by the sight, she fanned herself, leaned over behind his ear, and advised him, "You are merely learning by rote, but the context is incoherent, and your delivery lacks momentum and fluency. Since your family has no power or influence, and you refuse to go out and network, if you keep studying like this, you won't pass the imperial examinations even in another ten years."
Amidst the pattering rain, the youth looked up. Just as his face flushed under her gaze, he felt a sense of relief that this Princess was finally acting like a decent person. Having received the favor of the Princess's guidance, the youth entered the imperial court a few years later. He subsequently married the Princess, became the Prime Minister, and proved himself to be a peerless statesman of the nation.
