Spring of the Blade - Chapter 102

Chapter 102

This news terrified Qingyuan. She stood up in a panic, "What?"

Because the incident occurred within the inner quarters of the Commander’s mansion, the details were not made public before the women were thrown into prison. It would have been one thing if nothing had gone wrong, but once a tragedy occurred, Shen Run would be unable to escape the accusation of setting up a private prison and driving the family members of a court official to their deaths.

With such an event occurring on the very first day of the New Year, the holiday was effectively ruined. Though Haoxue and Madam Wang were detestable, their double suicide was entirely unnecessary. The group hurried to the Lulong Army camp. The one who had died was Haoxue; the woman who had been so sharp-tongued only recently was now stiff and cold, lying there like an abandoned object, looking truly horrifying.

Seeing this, Fangchun was both shocked and flustered. She burst into bitter tears, covering her face and saying, "I didn't want her to die! Why did she go to such lengths..."

Perhaps the loss of face had stripped her of the courage to live. After all, having been imprisoned, she would inevitably face a prison sentence after the holiday. For a young woman, her life would be ruined anyway, so she might have thought death was a cleaner way out. Yet, there were suspicious elements. Haoxue committing suicide was somewhat understandable, but Madam Wang’s crime was merely failing to educate her daughter well—the fact that she followed suit so enthusiastically was truly unfathomable.

The Palace Guard began their investigation. The coroner arrived, examining every corner of the cell in detail and inspecting the corpses. The points of suspicion only multiplied.

"The deceased used a skirt tie to hang themselves, which means they were disheveled and not even wearing their under-skirts when they died. This clearly contradicts their original intention for seeking death. If death was meant to preserve their reputation, then dying in such an undignified state—was it even necessary?" Yan Fu shook his head while analyzing. "I am not a woman, but I know that a skirt is crucial. If these two mother and daughter preferred to die without their skirts on, I suspect there is fraud involved."

Shen Run glanced at him, "That makes sense. What else?"

Yan Fu lifted the white cloth and pointed to the marks on Yao Haoxue’s neck. "According to the post-mortem lividity, the Yao woman likely died at the fifth watch this morning. That was exactly when the jailers were changing shifts, and with the holiday, the guards were lax. By the time she was discovered, she was already dead. However, Madam Wang luckily saved her life because the knot loosened and she fell. Commander, please look—the skirt tie is about three inches wide; even if folded, it would be over an inch thick. Yet, there are two faint marks on the Yao woman’s neck, and the darker part is only a finger’s width wide. This does not seem reasonable."

Shen Run nodded, turning his gaze to ask the coroner: "I recall you have a method to make injuries more visible."

The coroner replied in the affirmative, "Just mash up some scallion whites and smear them on the wounds, then cover them with vinegar-soaked paper. Wait for the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, then wash it with water, and the marks will appear." Having said this, he led his apprentices to begin the setup, temporarily asking those in the mortuary to step out.

Everyone retreated to the front hall. Seeing them emerge, Qingyuan and Fangchun rushed forward to ask for the results. Shen Run shook his head, "The coroner is examining the injuries; we will know the results in a while. This place is inauspicious; you should return first. Staying here won't help." He turned to ask the supervisor, "How is Madam Wang?"

The supervisor bowed, "Reporting to the Commander, she has not yet awakened. A physician has been sent to treat her; we will report as soon as there is news."

Though Fangchun hated them, seeing them actually dead made it hard to avoid a sense of guilt. She stood there wiping away tears and blaming herself, "I didn't expect things to turn out like this. If I had known, I would have just let it go; they didn't have to die..."

Shen Che, however, frowned, "They harmed my child; how could I just let it go? Them seeking death was fleeing from punishment. Even if it causes an uproar, I will take the responsibility."

However, despite his words, the situation was far from simple. After all, the mother and daughter were not commoners. If the Yao family pursued the matter, it was bound to become a massive scandal.

Qingyuan looked at Fangchun, who could do nothing but cry. Leaving her here would only distract the men, so she whispered, "Leave this to them to handle. Let’s go back and wait for news."

Fangchun moved her feet tearfully. Shen Run ordered someone to splash vinegar on the charcoal fire and told them to step over it. Places where people had died were unclean, and this method was necessary to ward off evil spirits. Still not at ease, he personally designated capable guards to escort them and ordered, "Send men to guard the doors well, I will return in a while."

Qingyuan acknowledged, supported Fangchun, and left. At this moment, the coroner came out to invite them in to inspect. Indeed, the pale bruising on the edges of the marks had faded, leaving only a narrow, vivid red line. One could see at a glance that she had been strangled by a hemp rope; even the twisted pattern of the rope was clearly distinguishable.

This was very clear: someone had intentionally ignited this fire, aiming to pull the Shen brothers down from their positions. However, in this world, aside from the Criminal Justice Department, it was the Palace Guard that handled the most cases. When people die, though their mouths cannot speak, their corpses will.

Of course, the outcome the mastermind hoped to see soon manifested. The entire Yao family learned the news; young and old alike rushed to the Lulong Army camp. For a time, wailing reached the heavens, filled with cries of injustice and fierce cursing, forming a chaotic mess.

Yao Shao had not expected that after parting that day, the next meeting would be with his daughter’s corpse and his unconscious wife. The world spun, and he nearly fainted. When he finally recovered, he ground his teeth and cried to the heavens: "Shen Run, you treat human lives like grass, causing my family to be broken and destroyed. I will go to the palace to file a formal complaint! Even if I have to lose my official position, I will seek justice for my wife and daughter!"

In the blink of an eye, the news that the Yao family had suffered a death spread like wildfire. Yao Shao kept his word and went to the capital to file his petition, tearfully accusing Shen Run of abusing his power and using private lynching before the Emperor.

The Emperor, still immersed in the atmosphere of the New Year and preparing to change the reign title after the holiday, was bewildered: "How could your family members be locked up in the Lulong Army camp? Didn't the Shen family just hold a grand banquet to thank guests a few days ago? Why would the Shen brothers do this, all of a sudden? There must be a beginning and an end to the story!"

The background was inconvenient to speak of, but since things had reached this point, he couldn't care about much else. Yao Shao said: "My wife and Shen Che’s wife were aunt and niece. My daughter and the Dong woman had been close since childhood. After I became the Junior Magistrate of Xuanzhou, my family moved to Youzhou. Because the Dong woman was lonely, my daughter often visited the Shen mansion to see her. At that time, the Dong woman was pregnant. One day, she accidentally fell and suffered a miscarriage. The Shen brothers took their anger out on my daughter, inciting a maid to frame her, and threw my wife and daughter into prison overnight." He ended with a long cry, "Sage, please see clearly! My wife and daughter are women of the inner quarters, and they were related to the Dong woman; how could they have done such a thing! Shen Run has power over the court and covers the sky with one hand. Whoever he targets, he treats them as if to kill them. All officials dare to be angry but do not dare to speak. My family has suffered this disaster, and I have had nowhere to turn for help. I intended to go to the capital to report to the Sage after the holiday, but I never expected to receive such tragic news. Sage, my daughter has died an unjust death, and my wife’s life is currently hanging by a thread! I beg the Sage to make the decision for me, to eradicate the treacherous officials and restore peace to this land."

Yao Shao spoke with emotion, but the Emperor was not very pleased. He turned and said, "According to your view, Yao Qing, my world is not peaceful enough, resulting in treacherous officials running rampant and the common people suffering... am I a muddled monarch played in the palms of others?"

Yao Shao was shocked, his face changing instantly. He stammered: "No, no... I absolutely did not... did not mean that. I mean... the Shen brothers are monopolizing power, and the entire court is complaining. Now they have thrown my wife and daughter into prison for no reason. My wife and daughter are suffering an injustice that cannot be washed away. If we were not at our wit's end, why would we seek death to prove our innocence? My daughter was only eighteen this year. Dying in the prime of her life—even if she died, she is a ghost of an unjust death. The Sage loves the people like your children; you even pity the old and young on the streets. How can you not cherish my family? Therefore, I boldly file this complaint before the Imperial presence against the Shen brothers, asking the Sage to make a wise judgment and preside over justice for my family."

This matter, if one set aside personal sentiments, was indeed Shen Run acting too far. Even if the female relatives of officials committed major crimes, they should have been detained in a separate, quiet place; they should not have been sent directly into a military camp prison. Now that people had died, and there was no witness left alive, it became Shen Run abusing his power to commit murder. Since someone had come to file a formal complaint, he could not be too biased. Shen Run’s arrogance was also a fact; using this to knock him down a peg would be enough to pass on the surface.

The Emperor sighed. Seeing Yao Shao crying so uncontrollably, he pacified him in a gentle tone: "I deeply sympathize with the misfortune your family has suffered, but now is the time when the court is in recess. This matter cannot be determined by listening to just one person. Wait until the fourth day, when the officials return to the court, and we will discuss it further. At that time, you will confront them face to face. If the Shen brothers truly violated the law, I will absolutely not show favoritism and will surely punish them severely."

Yao Shao was stunned. He had expected the Emperor to at least reluctantly summon them to the capital for questioning, but he had to wait until they had finished their peaceful New Year before making a decision. His righteous words also used the phrase "not show favoritism." It was evident that the friendship between Shen Run and the Emperor was already a private one. He felt a moment of disappointment. With his meager position as a sixth-rank official, could he really shake this powerful minister of the current court?

Yao Shao was busy in the palace, while Qingyuan was restless at home. Even during dinner in the evening, she held her chopsticks with a distracted mind, finding no flavor in her food.

Shen Run served her food: "Why aren't you eating? This is a young pheasant just sent from the manor; the taste is delicious. I’ve ordered people to catch a few alive to raise in captivity. When they lay eggs later, they will be better than the ones raised at home."

Qingyuan said "mm," lifting and dropping her chopsticks several times before finally setting them down, "I can't eat."

Shen Run knew her worries and comforted her: "Just set your heart at ease. I have my own plan for this matter. Although it will be hard to avoid being blamed in the end, compared to the goal I want to achieve, it counts for nothing."

Qingyuan was surprised. The more she heard, the more mystical it sounded. She couldn't believe it, "Could it be that the fate of the Yao mother and daughter was arranged by you?"

He lowered his eyes, eating his meal with composure. After a long while, he said no, "However, them harming my Shen family’s flesh and blood—they truly deserved to die."

Qingyuan understood that he was extremely disgusted by the harm done to Fangchun’s child. Even an ordinary family would pursue it to the end, not to mention the Shen family, who had finally achieved their first descendant. She was not unaware of Shen Run’s personality. Although he was an excellent husband in front of her, he was just as ruthless and powerful outside. She was also a bit afraid—afraid that he would kill because of his hatred, because according to the law, Haoxue’s crime was not enough to warrant death. To make her pay with her life, he had to fake a suicide to avenge that unborn child.

But doing so would likely bring fire upon himself. It was he who ordered them into prison, and now that they had died mysteriously, the Yao family would definitely not let it go. Fortunately, he had long had a notorious reputation, so Haoxue’s eight sisters dared not make a scene. If it were some other minor official, the roof would likely have been torn off.

She looked at him again. He didn't say much, continuing to eat with his usual elegance. Qingyuan hesitated many times but couldn't bring herself to ask, fearing that continued questioning would add to his troubles. She couldn't help him in official circles; all she could do was move forward and retreat with him, facing the wind and rain together.

In the following two days, he showed no signs of anxiety, eating and playing as if nothing had happened, accompanying the old Master to fish and admire paintings.

The seven-day New Year break was coming to an end. Because of the changing situation, Shen Run’s ten additional days of leave had to be shelved. Qingyuan served him as he put on his court dress with a heavy heart. While adjusting his lapels, she said: "Your wounds haven't fully healed yet. Let me accompany you to the capital; staying in Youzhou... I truly don't feel at ease."

He smiled after hearing this, gently pinching her cheek: "What is there to worry about? I have always had a firm grasp of my work. Don't be such a nervous old woman."

Qingyuan had no choice but to give up. When she sent him to the gate, she was still looking distressed. She stood under the steps and waved, "You must be careful."

Shen Run, in his fine silks and jade belt, looked spirited as he mounted his horse. He smiled: "I know what I'm doing. Wait at home for my news."

The two brothers whipped their horses and rode off, leaving Qingyuan and Fangchun to look at each other. Fangchun said: "Let’s pack up. As soon as they give the word, we will move."

Qingyuan nodded, tucking her hands into her sleeves as she looked down the straight road. The troop of horses gradually turned into tiny black dots and vanished. In this season of mist and clouds, the world was full of cold paleness, hard roads, branches stripped of leaves, and even the sky was white—dim and empty, making people feel desolate.

Naturally, there were those in the court who clapped and cheered at the Shen brothers’ downfall. But many more officials felt they couldn't lose face after attending their thank-you banquets, receiving their return gifts, and observing their wives’ happy interactions.

Yao Shao knelt in the temple, weeping bitterly, every word a blood-stained accusation against Shen Run. Those who feared the world wouldn't be chaotic shouted about how "the prince who breaks the law is the same as the commoner," while the fence-sitters held their tablets and pondered: "There must be a secret in this."

Censor-in-Chief Liu Ang had always been at odds with Shen Run. He hadn't sent a gift for Shen Run’s wedding and had no opportunity to attend the later thank-you banquets, so there was no sign of reconciliation. But even though he wasn't there, he knew everything happening at the Shen mansion perfectly, and he spoke just as plainly in front of Shen Run: "No matter how high the official rank, one should not ignore blood relations. Earlier, when Magistrate Shen’s wife turned against the Xie commissioner’s family, it could still be explained. But for the same thing to happen twice in one household, one cannot help but suspect whether it is coincidence or inevitability. Junior Magistrate Yao’s wife was the cousin of Commander Shen’s wife. Blood is thicker than water. Even if there were misunderstandings between them, it should not reach the point of throwing people into a military camp prison. Now that one is dead and one is injured, Magistrate Shen cannot escape the blame. Before, people only said Magistrate Shen suppressed his colleagues, but I didn't expect that he would be so ruthless when dealing with his own domestic affairs."

Commander of the Infantry Han Yu glanced at Liu Ang. Because his wife had praised Shen Run’s wife highly, he had become much closer to Shen Run than usual. Being the highest commander of the Three Departments, they often helped each other, so he bowed toward the Emperor and said: "Sage, Junior Magistrate Yao’s wife was only the cousin of the Commandant’s wife—a distant connection! On that day, we were feasting at the Shen mansion. During the meal, the younger Master Shen left the table drunk. According to my wife, the Yao girl snuck out halfway, intending to force the younger Master Shen to marry her as a peer wife. Furthermore, the miscarriage of the younger Master Shen’s wife was also caused by the Yao girl intentionally throwing an elephant-gall skin to make her fall. Is this still just a ‘domestic affair’? Censor Liu, kicking a man when he is down is the behavior of a villain. You cannot use this opportunity to frame him because you have long been at odds with Magistrate Shen, and do not let your selfish motives ruin the sage books you have studied all these years."

Liu Ang’s face turned red with anger, "Commander Han, Liu has never sought revenge for personal reasons; everything I said is the truth. First the Xie family, then the Yao family—can anyone frame anyone?"

Thus, the eyes of the entire court shifted to Xie Shu. He came out of the ranks holding his tablet. Everyone expected him to express his pent-up frustrations, but to their surprise, he bowed calmly and said calmly: "Sage, there is a saying that it is difficult for a clear official to judge domestic affairs. However, regarding the various things that happened in my household, I know them clearly in my heart. I have four daughters in my life; the top three daughters were raised by me, only the youngest daughter was not by my side since childhood..."

Shen Run turned his head and took over his words with a smile: "Since we are talking about this, Commissioner, why not be frank? It will also save people from always talking about my wife turning against the Xie family, and save the Commissioner from the charge of divorcing his wife without cause."

The matter was indeed a storm, and he was not comfortable mentioning such shameful things. But now there was no way to retreat, and further concealment was meaningless. After struggling for a moment, he lowered his head and said: "Some time ago, I divorced my wife. I assume the Sage and the officials have all heard. The inside story... is truly hard to speak of. It is my family’s misfortune, and it is my own lack of discipline. It resulted in the mistress poisoning a concubine and framing another. I covered it up many times for the sake of face, and because of this, my flesh and blood were left outside without being acknowledged. I am ashamed of my four daughters. Every event has a cause and effect. Therefore, her refusal to return to the Xie family gate after marrying Magistrate Shen is not her fault; it is my fault."

For a second-rank official to reveal the dark secrets hidden in his household required tremendous courage. Shen Run waited for him to take a stand before the full court. As long as he said it himself, Qingyuan would never have to bear the charge of her mother being a murderer again.

Finally, Xie Shu still had a conscience and was no longer muddled at this time. Shen Run was satisfied. He took a step forward, stood on the wide passage, and bowed: "Sage, the Yao mother and daughter were not self-destructive but were murdered by someone. I have captured the culprit and thrown them into the government prison, waiting for the Sage’s decision."

——

A woman sent back to her maiden family had a very hard time.

Madam Hu had bumped her head in the Xie family in a plea for death, but unfortunately, she could not die. Xie Shu was ruthless in his actions; he did not even allow her to recover from her injuries and sent word to the Hu family while she was still delirious. Her old parents could not afford the embarrassment and naturally would not step forward. The one who came to pick her up was her youngest brother, who was the least successful in the family and held a low-ranking position at the yamen. He brought two old maids and a carriage. Seeing his sister in such a state upon entering, he jumped up like a firecracker and demanded an explanation. Xie Shu, in a bad mood, sneered: "The Xie family has been brought to ruin by her. I haven't gone to your Hu family to reason; are you here to make trouble first? It is better to be silent and quietly lead her back. If there is anything you don't understand, ask your sister; don't make a scene in my mansion. My family cannot accommodate this big Buddha."

The Fourth Master of the Hu family was somewhat confused, "My sister has been in your house for over twenty years, managing the household for you and bearing your children. A single letter of divorce, and that’s it?"

Xie Shu grew annoyed, "She has ruined my house enough; what more does she want? Get out! If you don't roll away, I will order people to carry you out!"

Seeing that he had made up his mind, the Fourth Master knew there was no room for discussion. Zhenzhi quietly stepped up, picked up his mother, and sent her into the carriage. Then he turned back and said: "Fourth Uncle, you take my mother back to live for a few days first. I will think of a way. Perhaps when Father’s anger subsides, he will allow my mother to return." As he spoke, he fished a pouch out of his breast and placed it beside her pillow, whispering: "Mother, I will come to see you when I have time."

The Fourth Master looked at the pouch. It was filled with silver notes; he couldn't tell the amount. Moreover, his sister was allowed to take two large bundles with her. Having been the mistress of the house for decades, she must have saved a lot of private wealth. With no other choice, he could only do this for now. If a husband is gone, having money is fine, too.

The carriage creaked into the alley where the Hu mansion was located. The old lady and several daughters-in-law were waiting in front of the door, still unable to adapt to the sudden change.

They also knew about the scandal that had spread from the Xie mansion earlier. They were uneasy at the time, fearing that Xie Shu would blame them after the second miss had caused such a big event. Now they were right—he really had lashed out. The eldest sister had been returned to her maiden family. A man divorcing his wife was no small matter, especially in a century-old noble family like the Xie family. Everyone saw the letter of divorce and felt that the situation had gone, and that the eldest sister had completely fallen. But then they thought again: the eldest legitimate son of the Xie family was born by her. Perhaps Xie Shu was just angry for a few days, and in the end, with no one to manage the household, and considering their eldest master, maybe there would be a day when she would be picked up again. Therefore, everyone decided to hold their tempers and observe the direction of the wind. After all, a mistress who had managed a household for twenty years being divorced and returned to her maiden family was unheard of.

Therefore, for the first few days, the sisters-in-law treated her well, asking about her well-being and comforting her, without a single disrespectful word. But five days passed, ten days passed—let alone Xie Shu, even Zhenzhi stopped visiting. Now the Hu family panicked. This older sister who had been cast out by her husband’s family—surely she wouldn't really cling to her maiden family for a lifetime, would she?

The old parents of the Hu family were aged and no longer managed domestic affairs. Moreover, the four daughters-in-law were not easy to deal with. They only ordered her to live back in her original courtyard and allowed her to open a small kitchen for meals. The four sisters-in-law came over in turns to say sour things. First, they scolded Xie Shu for being heartless, then they complained that Zhenzhi was unfilial for letting his mother suffer.

"I’m not saying anything, but the eldest master is also useless. If he had any backbone, he would have made a scene to divide the household and set up his own home to take his mother over. He is better off—likely still coveting the Xie family’s property and unwilling to lose out, leaving the eldest sister to make do in her maiden home. Sigh... to have given birth to such a son is like having given birth to a root of a club."

Madam Hu felt sour in her heart, but she felt she couldn't argue back, so she had to endure it.

When she first returned, the Hu family had also exploded. Several younger brothers wanted to seek justice for her and planned to sue Xie Shu for divorcing her without cause. However, she had secrets held against her, and if they really went to court, they would gain nothing. After careful consideration, they had to settle the matter. The sisters-in-law were amazed by her ruthlessness and didn't dare to provoke her for a few days, but as time passed, the ugly words came. They would point at the mulberry and scold the locust outside the courtyard wall: "Which family doesn't have concubines? To be so intolerant! At that time, one was just born, and one was still in the belly—how cruel a heart it must take to play such a trick to kill two birds with one stone. We are useless, kneaded from dough, with a heart of tofu; we can’t learn such tricks. But good hearts always have good rewards—success for sons and grandsons lies within."

Madam Hu was helpless and had to spend money to buy peace, taking advantage of the coming New Year to subsidize each courtyard with ten or eight taels, and giving extra rewards to those who served nearby. The four sisters-in-law saw that she had money, and their attitudes suddenly changed. Their conversations turned into complaining about the high cost of living and their own financial tightness. From initial hints, it finally turned into borrowing.

She had indeed brought some money from her husband’s family, but with such a big family scraping at her, even if she were made of iron, how many nails could she drive? Twenty days later, three hundred taels of silver had been poured in. She began to tighten her purse strings, but how could life under someone else’s roof be easy?

The eldest sister-in-law came with a fake smile: "Eldest Sister, this is not the way to go. You are still young, not seventy or eighty. Why not find someone else? Even if you go over to be a filler wife, at least you have something to eat."

Madam Hu was immediately unable to catch her breath and cursed loudly: "Where did this bastard woman come from? Even if I am down, I am still your husband’s own sister. Before, you begged for favors and said all the flattering words. Now that you see me losing power, you actually tell me to remarry. What a poisonous heart!"

The eldest wife gave an "oh" and raised her voice, sharp and piercing, "Eldest Sister prides herself on having been a titled lady and can't let go of this face. But what can be done? You have been divorced, and the title of Lady of the Commandery has been revoked. The court will not give you a penny of salary. If you don't ask people to support you, do you want us to support you until you die?"

Madam Hu was so angry she collapsed. Every household was busily preparing for the holiday, while she had become a stray dog, humiliated by these heartless people. The more she felt angry, the more she felt hatred. The root of all this lay with Qingyuan. She had relied on marrying Shen Run to pressure the Xie family. If one day Shen Run were to fall, how much longer could she show off?

Therefore, she had to keep an eye on the Shen family. Any disturbance might be her opportunity to turn things around.

The Shen family held a grand banquet. On that day, the second house was in chaos, and they threw the Yao mother and daughter into prison. When she learned this news, she was so happy she couldn't stand or sit. Her second brother was a regimental commander in the Lulong Army. With such an advantage, there was no reason to miss this chance.

With the holiday coming up, all officials were given time off. On that day, Hu Zhongkuan happened to be at home, and the second sister-in-law had gone out for shopping, so she went to their courtyard specifically to speak to this brother.

Hu Zhongkuan was teasing a parrot under the eaves at that time. Seeing her come in through the door, he was quite surprised and went out to call her "Eldest Sister." Among the brothers and sisters in the family, even if they were born of the same mother, not all were close. But Zhongkuan was different; he was brought up by her own hands. Among the brothers and sisters, only this second brother had the deepest affection for her.

Hu Zhongkuan expressed deep sympathy for the eldest sister’s plight. But after a man forms a family, there are many places where he cannot act according to his will, so aside from verbal concern, there was really no other way to help. Today, because the second sister-in-law was not around, it was convenient for the siblings to talk. He hurried to invite her into the house to sit, had the maid serve tea and pastries, and only then asked: "How has sister been during this time? I have been in the army camp and really couldn't look after you. I was just thinking of going to see you, but the maid said you were not feeling well and were recuperating, so I didn't want to disturb you."

A sorrowful expression appeared on Madam Hu’s face: "I live worse than a dog now. How could I be any better? My illness is all caused by anger. A few days ago, the eldest sister-in-law came and advised me to be a filler wife for a widower. Is this the kind of talk that family kin should say? I’ve seen it through—the fawning before was just seeing the Xie family’s money and power. Once I lost power, the first to look down on me were my own people."

Hu Zhongkuan sighed along with her: "The coldness of the world is like this. Eldest Sister should be more open-minded and take care of yourself."

The siblings remained speechless, sitting listlessly for a while before Madam Hu said: "Everything I have today is caused by Shen Run and his wife. I really cannot swallow this breath; I must return the favor." Her eyes looked at him eagerly: "Zhongkuan, do you hope your sister has a day of rising again?"

Hu Zhongkuan was the most emotional and the least scheming of the four brothers. He said blankly: "Naturally, how could I not hope for my sister’s well-being?"

Madam Hu shifted her body to sit closer, "There is a way to help me break out of the predicament and return to the Xie family. Are you willing to give me a hand?"

Hu Zhongkuan did not know what she was talking about, but he still nodded: "Eldest Sister, please speak."

"Have you heard about the incident in the Shen family?" she said eagerly, "Magistrate Yao’s wife and daughter have been thrown into the Lulong Army prison. As long as it is utilized properly, it is a great opportunity to take down Shen Run. Think about it: that girl Qingyuan hates me to the bone. Now that I have returned, and you are working under Shen Run, how could he not make things difficult for you? It is the holiday now, and he hasn't had the time to deal with you yet. Once the holiday is over, I fear your position as a regimental commander will not be kept."

Hu Zhongkuan looked at her hesitantly: "What does sister mean?"

Madam Hu said: "Let me ask you this: if the Yao mother and daughter die an unjust death, will Shen Run be implicated?"

"That goes without saying," Hu Zhongkuan said. "Locking them up before a verdict is reached, one must ensure the safety of the prisoners. Putting women in a male prison is not appropriate in itself. If those above blame it, I fear he will not end well..." He spoke slower and slower, pausing to look at her expression. There was a murderous aura in her eyes that made his heart jump. "The Yao mother and daughter may not have the intention of suicide..."

"Then find a way to make them 'commit suicide.' During the big holiday, the garrison in the army camp must be lax. Those jailers also have no heart to guard. Forging the appearance of their suicide will not be too difficult."

Hu Zhongkuan was frightened by her boldness: "Eldest Sister, this is a matter of human life."

Madam Hu sneered: "I know human life is at stake, but we are doing this to save ourselves. If we wait, Shen Run will come to trouble you and Zhongliang. By then, we will have no power to parry, and the Hu family will become the next Xie family."

However, Hu Zhongkuan was still hesitant, wondering if taking such a risk was really worth it. He was distracted, pacing blankly, looking at this pleading sister and then thinking of his own uncertain future. In the eyes of a military commander, human life is not as important as it is to ordinary people. Especially for those who have experienced battles—after having lived through the years of riding and swordsmanship, figuring out how to take two lives does not seem difficult.

He had been in the Lulong Army for a long time; he was even more familiar with various yamen and departments than Shen Run. Among those jailers, there were many low-level soldiers with unfulfilled ambitions. After all, joining the army was not for such inferior work. Once there is an opportunity for transfer, who wouldn't want to strive for it?

He found Ma San, who was changing shifts on the first day, treated him to a meal with wine, and explained his purpose. He had thought that if Ma San refused, the matter would end there. Who knew that those who guarded the prison were all soldiers hanging their lives on their belts? Ma San first politely expressed that Shen Run had sent these people in, so killing them would carry huge risks, then he changed the subject and smiled: "I don't seek a official position. If people die, I will be transferred out of the prison and be suspected by others. How about this? The regimental commander awards some drinking money, allowing me to pay off my gambling debts and have a good holiday. I will take care of this."

Hu Zhongkuan’s tension was half-relieved. He went back to discuss it with his sister. Madam Hu took out a bank note for one hundred taels and handed it to him. Her action and expression had not the slightest hesitation.

Well, an arrow shot from a bow cannot be recalled. He handed the silver to Ma San and repeated to him: "Regardless of success or failure, keep your mouth shut. Don't forget you have a wife, children, and an old mother. If not for yourself, think about them."

Ma San tucked the bank note between his fingers and sneered under the lamp: "Take people’s money and eliminate disasters for them. Regimental Commander, rest assured."

Later, news came that the Yao mother and daughter were dead and injured. This was not a good omen. If Madam Yao woke up and testified against the murderer, that would be a disaster.

Hu Zhongkuan rushed to send a capable servant to find Ma San, but unfortunately, he could not be found anywhere. Madam Hu sat there blankly, her brain spinning like a lantern: "Could it be that Shen Run lied that Madam Yao was alive to lure Ma San into the trap..."

Before she could finish, a squad of palace guards broke in, and without a word, arrested the siblings, their voices icy: "Regimental Commander Hu, Happy New Year. The Commander has an order—please come to the Palace Guard yamen to drink a cup of tea."

The whole family didn't know what had happened. Seeing her husband being arrested, the second wife slapped her leg and wailed: "This prostitute, a star of misfortune! You ruined the Xie family and came to ruin your maiden family. Heavens! Second Master... Second Master!" She chased after them and collapsed on the straight road in front of the door.

——

The hall was dead silent. Hearing Shen Run finish speaking slowly, the Emperor gritted his teeth: "The evil of a woman, when it gets evil, is truly chilling. Is that Madam Yao dead or alive now?"

Shen Run said: "Reporting to the Sage, both mother and daughter are dead. If I hadn't released such news, I wouldn't have been able to make the real culprit reveal themselves."

Yao Shao was like a clay statue ruined by the rain. He had thought at least his wife was alive, but it turned out to be a smoke screen from Shen Run. He drooped his sleeves and muttered: "No wonder... no wonder you didn't let me see my wife..."

Shen Run turned around and bowed to Yao Shao, "Although Madam Yao and her daughter truly committed harm, I still have to apologize to the Junior Magistrate. According to the law, their crime was merely fifty strokes of the cane and three years of imprisonment. Now that they have lost their lives, I feel very ashamed of you, Junior Magistrate."

Yao Shao looked at him and said coldly: "Two lives—can they be written off with a word from Magistrate Shen?"

The Emperor on the dragon chair furrowed his brow, knowing that being too biased toward Shen Run would inevitably lead to private discussions among the ministers. He pondered for a moment and said: "Shen Run is at fault, at fault for lack of diligence in guarding prisoners. The Lulong Army is the elite force of our dynasty, guarding the capital. In such a camp, such a monstrous thing as a prisoner being assassinated happens. Shen Run cannot escape the blame. Considering the Shen couple established the orphanage to care for the elderly and young in the city, I order a penalty of six months' salary, a one-month suspension, and the opportunity to make a fresh start and wait for further performance."

The monthly salary of a second-rank official is 500 shi. A penalty of six months is itchy for Shen Run. As for the one-month suspension, this is not a punishment, it is practically a honeymoon.

Shen Run was desolate on the surface but secretly happy in his heart. He knelt and bowed, his forehead firmly against the back of his hand: "I accept the decree, long live, long live, long live."

The court was dismissed. The ministers withdrew from the Taiji Hall. In this year and month, human lives are truly worthless. Yao Shao’s loneliness had no comfort. After all, he was a sixth-rank official, and it was caused by lack of discipline at home. If the woman in the back house died, she died. Compared to the Yao family, everyone would rather sympathize with Xie Shu. Although the Hu woman was divorced, she had done all sorts of evil. What kind of eyes did Commissioner Xie have to have slept with such a jackal for those years?

Shen Run went out with Han Yu and sized Han Yu up: "Brother Lantian, thank you for today. But how did you know what happened in my backyard?"

Han Yu smiled, "Your wife visited my wife on the second day of the Lunar New Year and told her all the causes and consequences."

Shen Run suddenly realized, "Women! Women, when they encounter something, they always want to find someone to discuss it..." He shook his head helplessly as he spoke: "Sigh, women!"

The people around him laughed at him for having it both ways. The group walked out of the Taiji Gate and gradually dispersed, each going to their own government office. Shen Run stopped and looked at Xie Shu, only to feel that the figure looked suddenly old. Even if the Hu woman had no more connection with him, after all, she was the mother of his eldest son. Now that this incident had happened, the Xie family could not be alone.

But no matter what, a month of suspension was a good thing for Shen Run. The government office had Shen Che and his confidants to manage it, so he had no worries. After the court was dismissed, he returned directly to Youzhou. When he arrived home, Qingyuan was packing her belongings. Seeing him return, she was a little surprised.

"How did the case go?" She looked outside: "Did the Sage blame you?"

He looked sallow, sighing as soon as he entered: "The Sage is furious and has relieved me of my post."

Qingyuan was dumbfounded, but she relaxed in an instant. She was not the kind of person who coveted power. Since he was no longer an official, he must have other ways out and could live just as well.

She patted his shoulder: "I have long wanted to travel to famous mountains and rivers with you. Now, I finally have the opportunity."

Shen Run looked at her suspiciously: "You have also lost the title of titled lady. Don't you feel it is a pity?"

She smiled: "This title was earned for me by you. Having enjoyed it for two days is enough. If it is lost, let it be lost, as long as you are not lost..."

But before she finished speaking, she was hugged into his arms. He kissed her cheek loudly and laughed: "Look, ancestors! I have married a good wife who can share wealth and hardship!"

Qingyuan was confused by him. When he proudly finished telling what had happened in the past few days, she couldn't help kicking him: "You are always like this. Is it fun to scare people? My liver is almost scared to pieces by you!"

He rubbed his calf with a smile: "My lady, I have avenged your mother and Fangchun’s child. Do you like it?"

She understood: "So you intentionally sent the Yao mother and daughter into the Lulong Army prison? Because the Hu woman’s brother serves in the Lulong Army, you were sure they would not miss the opportunity, to play the mantis stalking the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind?"

No wonder he said that day he wanted to achieve his goal. So it was this. Qingyuan had always known that he was calculating deeply; if he were not, he would not be where he was today. Now that the revenge to be taken was taken, yet, for no reason, sadness welled up in her heart.

She hugged his waist tightly with sorrow: "Thank you. My mother and Aunt Xia can also rest in peace in the underworld. But the Yao mother and daughter... shouldn't have been used as bait! You must not do this in the future. The killing karma is too heavy, which is disadvantageous to us."

But he did not regret it: "Good and evil will have their rewards in the end. But some things, when the time is long, the heavens forget. Since so, it is more direct for me to do it. I am not a good man; I only know an eye for an eye. It is a pity that the Hu woman only has one life; otherwise, her head should have been cut off four times."

Perhaps this is cause and effect. No one knows which guillotine they will fall under after taking the wrong step.

The Yao family case was quickly determined: the three involved were to be executed immediately. On the day of the execution, Qingyuan brought her mother’s tablet to the execution ground. Shen Run would not let her get off the carriage, only stopping on the side of the road to watch from afar. She watched the Hu woman and the other two being pushed onto the high platform, watching the executioner take off the sign from behind their collars. At the moment the sword was swung, Shen Run raised his hand to cover her eyes. She held the tablet in her hands high. She wanted her mother to see that today, the injustice was finally cleared.

But as for the Yao family, she truly felt guilty. Qingyuan and Fangchun pooled five hundred taels of silver as a funeral gift and ordered people to send it over. Yao Shao was furious and drove the people away. It was the married daughters who met and accepted it. After all, the dead are gone, and the living must bear the humiliation and continue to live. The official rank of the Shen brothers was too high, and they had the protection of the Sage. Opposing them is like an egg hitting a rock. Those married daughters knew this principle deeply.

"The feud with the Yao family is too deep. A funeral gift of a few hundred taels is likely unable to resolve their hatred," Shen Run sat in a chair, holding the big round meat bun and whispering to himself: "I have to think of a way to solve it once and for all."

Although he was relieved of his post, he could still walk around in the palace. He mentioned this concern before the Sage, and the Sage solved it very directly: "I am afraid of further trouble if they stay in the capital. Send them far away. He is now a sixth-rank official. Reward him as a Du Shui Shizhe of the sixth rank and let him manage the rivers and irrigation in the Shu region."

Shen Run said yes, "I will order the Secretariat to draft the decree."

The Sage said not to be busy, "There is one more thing that troubles me. Tibet sent envoys to the capital to ask for the marriage of one of my dynasty’s princesses. I have thought about it repeatedly. A princess will not do. First, I cannot let my flesh and blood marry into such a wild land; second, most of the princesses are arrogant. If they make a mess and start a fight, it will lead to war between the two countries."

Shen Run pondered: "Then select an age-appropriate woman from the noble mansions and reward her with the title of princess. That is not impossible."

The Sage was worried: "Since the founding of our Great Jing, there has never been a precedent for a royal woman to cross the border. In my reign, if the rules are broken, how will I face the ancestors in the future?"

This was very clear. Shen Run had always been holding the title of Shizhong, and no one knew the thoughts inside the Sage better than he did.

Some things are hard for the Emperor to say, so there must be someone who understands the intentions to give advice and speak for the Emperor. Shen Run was accustomed to this. He tucked his hands and smiled: "Since the Sage cannot bear to have a golden branch and jade leaf marry far away, there are many beauties in the palace. Selecting one with a prominent background to act as a princess would not disgrace the Tibetan King."

The Sage showed a nod of approval: "Then in my servant’s view, who should be sent?"

He turned his head and looked at the layers of palace halls. Perhaps there was someone who was suitable to fill this vacancy.

The next day, Qingyuan entered the Changqiu Palace. After paying respect to the Empress, they engaged in small talk. The Empress asked if the house in the capital was settled. She smiled and said yes: "Everything is ready-made. The capital is more prosperous and wealthy than Youzhou. My sister-in-law and I wandered for two days, and we didn't even visit the East and West Markets."

The Empress nodded: "This year, there are more foreign merchants than in previous years, bringing many rare items. Just listening to the people below, I feel dizzy."

Qingyuan agreed: "It shows the country is prosperous and the people are at peace under the Sage’s rule. Now that the war on the border has been settled, the caravans are smooth and the sources of goods are naturally sufficient."

Just as she was speaking, Qingrong came in with a tea tray, served the tea cup respectfully, and then stepped back respectfully. Qingyuan watched her eyebrows carefully. After several months of discipline in the Changqiu Palace, she was not as cynical as before. But the younger sister became a titled lady, and the elder sister had to serve tea—such a status quo is inevitably ironic.

Qingyuan smiled at the Empress: "Your Highness, I ask for a grace from Your Highness: allow me to have a few words with Xie Cairen."

The Empress understood and nodded. She stood up and bowed, exiting the Changqiu Palace.

It was already the season of spring and flowers blooming. The flowering trees in the palace were slowly sprouting. The tree crowns were covered with a layer of pale green velvet, and the vague flower buds emerged like sharp tender shoots. Qingrong held the tea tray, stood under the tree and looked up. The nearby trees and the birds in the distance formed a clear spring day.

She caught a glimpse of someone standing beside her. She also looked up and watched from a distance like her. She didn't need to look to know it was Qingyuan.

"The Hu woman has been executed. Does elder sister know?" Qingyuan said in a light tone, as if sighing at the spring atmosphere.

"This matter, in the end, you managed to do it." Qingrong said indifferently, "When I entered the palace, I also wanted to stand out, to get the favor of the Sage, and then kill her... It’s a pity, I didn't have such good luck. Now that you have avenged yourself, it’s good. Let’s say I borrowed your east wind."

Qingyuan turned her head to look at her: "Third sister, have you ever thought about going out?"

Qingrong was slightly startled, "Going out?"

"Rather than staying in this deep palace to be a slave, it is better to fly far away and live a free life. There are too many beauties in this palace who are unparalleled in color and talent. When will the Sage see you? I cannot bear to see you wasting your life in this harem. Now you are young and can stay in the Changqiu Palace. When you are old, without children, do you really want to end your life alone in the Shangyang Palace?"

These things, it was not that she hadn't thought about it, but what could she do!

"Once you enter the palace gate, it is as deep as the sea..." Qingrong shook her head with a bitter smile, "How can I get out."

Qingyuan said: "If there is a way to get you out and save the Xie family, would you like to try?"

Qingrong finally turned her head. Ripples stirred in those dead-water eyes, and she looked at her with hope.

The reputation of the Xie family was completely ruined because of the beheading of Madam Hu. She was in the deep palace, and she was not unaware of things outside. The family she grew up in—even if there was no warmth, how could she not feel cold when it was ruined like that?

She opened her mouth and asked embarrassingly: "What way do you have?"

Qingyuan said: "Yesterday the Sage summoned Shen Run to the palace to discuss matters, saying that the Tibetan King was asking for marriage to our dynasty. The Sage did not want the princess to marry far away, and wanted to choose one from the noble daughters to marry for the princess." After a slight pause, she added, "The outside of the Great Wall is bitterly cold, and the climate is certainly not as pleasant as the Central Plains. But I think, if you marry for the princess, the Sage will certainly reward you with the name of princess. You will be the official wife of the Tibetan King once you go. Isn't that better than suffering in the palace? But there are pros and cons—leaving your hometown, maybe you will never come back in your life. This one must be thought about."

Qingrong listened and became silent. After a long while, she said: "There is nothing here for me to care about. Talking about it, there is only a father, but this father... originally was not very close. I swallowed my anger in the Xie family for sixteen years. My birth mother is no longer here. My father only has Qingru in his eyes. I am the most inconspicuous daughter of the Xie family. If I can really go beyond the Great Wall and save the Xie family gate once more, it can be considered as repaying my father’s kindness of raising me."

This is the most helpless and most favorable choice. When you are about to rot in a place, only by moving can you find a new way out.

Qingyuan nodded, "If you have made up your mind, I will ask Shen Run to plead for you. But third sister, do you want to reconsider?"

Qingrong said it is not necessary, smiling miserably, "Eldest sister was engaged to the Kaiguo Bo family, you were engaged to the Commander’s mansion. If I become a princess, it is not worse than you, is it?"

Some people are competitive all their lives. In the end, as long as there is a little bit of advantage to self-comfort, it is enough to support the next few decades.

Qingyuan said yes, "In terms of status, neither I nor the eldest sister is as good as you."

The smile on her face turned into boundless bitterness. She nodded while smiling, "Good... good... let’s do it this way. I want to leave here, never to come back, which is very good."

Qingyuan exited from the Changqiu Palace. Shen Run was still waiting at the left Yintai Gate. Seeing her appear, he reached out his hand to her.

Those fingers were warm, just like the day of their wedding. He held her hand gently in his palm and walked slowly with her outside the palace wall by the moat. In the second month of spring, the willows swayed gently, occasionally brushing across his shoulder. Under the soft sunlight, his profile still looked like a handsome man in his twenties. His voice was also lazy, "What did she say?"

Qingyuan felt subtle sadness, "She agreed. Originally, it was a good thing for her and the Xie family, but for some reason, I feel a little sad. Probably because I have too few relatives in this world, and they are all moving away one by one. Life will become more and more lonely."

Shen Run suddenly stopped. "My lady, you have become sentimental lately."

Qingyuan made an "eh" sound, "Wasn't I like this before?"

He evaluated objectively: "Vengeful, wicked but firm."

She was stunned, "Am I that kind of person?"

Shen Run nodded heavily.

"Then how have I become so weak now?"

He thought about it and came up with the most reasonable answer—

"Are you pregnant?"
