A Love Confession - Chapter 2

Chapter 2 - We Have Nothing to Do with Each Other

Xu Sui had thought that last night's meeting was merely a fleeting passing of paths, never expecting to run into Zhou Jingze at the hospital again the very next day. Xu Sui had just come down from the operating room, and the clear hand sanitizer in her palm hadn't even been rubbed in yet when the head nurse ran over hurriedly, her tone anxious: "There's a patient over in the outpatient clinic who stuck a lightbulb in her mouth. She's panicked out of her mind, and Dr. Song can't get it out, so he's calling for you to head over right now."

"Okay, I'll head over right away." Xu Sui held her hands under the tap to rinse them briefly, then went straight toward the outpatient department.

The door to the office was pushed open, and Xu Sui walked in with her hands in her pockets. At a glance, she saw Zhou Jingze, along with several nurses and doctors surrounding the patient, looking completely at a loss. The patient was a young girl, so anxious right now that tears were welling up in her eyes while making intermittent, slurred noises.

To make matters worse, the man accompanying her on the side was actually mocking the young girl, his cold, familiar voice vibrating in Xu Sui's ears: "Little Ming downstairs who is three and a half years old plays this game too. Why don't you two just form a duo and make your debut together?"

The young girl couldn't make a sound, casting him a reproachful glance.

The faint intimacy in their back-and-forth interaction fell into Xu Sui's eyes. She lowered her gaze, concealing the emotions beneath her eyes.

Xu Sui walked over, took the protective gloves handed to her by a nurse, walked in front of the patient, and pinched her chin to examine her carefully. She found that the lightbulb was stuck right in her mouth, fitting the size precisely.

Zhou Jingze noticed her at this moment as well. Xu Sui deliberately ignored the gaze fixed on her, turning her head to ask an intern doctor behind her: "Did you use paraffin oil?"

"We used it, but it didn't work," the doctor answered.

Xu Sui bowed her head. It seemed the hairband tied behind her head was a bit loose, causing a strand of hair on her forehead to fall and stick to her cheek. She observed the lightbulb held in the patient's mouth once more and spoke: "Go fetch a surgical bag."

Five minutes later, under the watchful eyes of the crowd, Xu Sui softly instructed the patient to relax while slowly feeding the surgical bag inside using a root canal tool. Once the surgical bag completely enclosed the lightbulb, Xu Sui spoke up:

"Bite down hard."

The girl kept shaking her head, terror in her eyes—what if it exploded when she bit down? Xu Sui comforted her: "It'll be fine."

Xu Sui soothed her for a while, but it was to no avail. The girl whimpered, unable to speak, tears welling in her eyes, her nerves stretched taut.

Xu Sui looked at the earrings she was wearing—silver leaf-shaped earrings—and said as if inadvertently: "Your earrings are quite pretty."

The girl grinned, her attention instantly drawn away. She pulled out her phone and opened an app, whimpering as she spoke. Though intermittent, the words could be pieced together—I'll find the link for you.

Just as the girl was focusing on finding the link for Xu Sui, Xu Sui took advantage of her relaxed state. Placing her hand on the girl's lower jaw, she ruthlessly snapped it downward with force, producing a "click" sound along with the sound of breaking glass.

The girl froze for two seconds. Realizing what happened, she let out a screaming "Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah!" Zhou Jingze patted her head, letting out a soft chuckle: "Alright, I'll take you out for ice cream in a bit."

The girl instantly quieted down, throwing tantrums no longer.

He rarely coaxed anyone; as long as he said a few nice words, a woman would voluntarily surrender.

Leaving the rest to the outpatient doctor to handle, Xu Sui took off her protective gloves and threw them into the trash bin. Inserting her hands into the pockets of her white coat, she left the outpatient department.

Looking at Dr. Xu's cool, distant back, the girl was still shaken: "Soft girls really can't be trusted. Here I was seriously finding the link for her, yet she gave me a gentle knife."

Xu Sui returned to her office and stayed busy for over half an hour. When she stepped out and passed by the nurse's station front desk, a young nurse called out to stop her: "Hey, Dr. Xu, someone was looking for you just now! It was the family member of that person with the lightbulb in her mouth. Look, this is what he left for you, saying it's a thank-you gift."

Xu Sui looked over. It was a pack of lychee-peach flavored milk along with a blue hairband. Her gaze froze, not shifting away for a moment. Several young nurses leaned together, teasing: "Dr. Xu, that man is seriously so handsome. He just curled the corner of his lips and smiled at Little Zhang, and Little Zhang almost lost her soul."

Zhou Jingze indeed had this kind of ability. A playboy—he basically didn't need to do anything; with a crook of his finger, or sometimes even just a single glance, countless women would throw themselves at him one after another.

Xu Sui nodded, turning around to leave. The nurse called her back, saying: "Dr. Xu, you haven't taken your things yet."

"You guys can take them and split them among yourselves." Xu Sui's expression was calm.

Xu Sui turned around and walked forward, only to see Zhou Jingze at a corner not far away, along with the girl beside him.

That girl was dressed fashionably, with bright and glamorous looks, bold red lips, and an alluring figure. Earlier in the clinic, Xu Sui had already experienced this girl's knack for acting coquettish.

She looked up; the girl was shaking Zhou Jingze's arm, saying who knows what, clearly acting coy. Zhou Jingze had no expression on his face, but his brows were relaxed—he was clearly quite receptive to this treatment.

Unconsciously, Xu Sui's hands inside her coat pockets clenched tightly until her fingertips turned pale. Only when the feeling of pain hit did she snap awake. Hasn't he always been like this? Loving the glamorous, seductive, and bold type, whereas she was too good, too well-behaved, and plain.

Good students were never within his range of choices.

Running straight into them like this, Xu Sui could only walk over. They obviously saw Xu Sui as well. The girl called out to stop her, her smile bright: "Dr. Xu, thank you for earlier!"

Xu Sui shook her head: "You're welcome. It's just what we ought to do."

The girl stood next to Zhou Jingze. She glanced at the man, distinctly sensing that her brother's mood had turned odd after seeing this Dr. Xu.

There was definitely something fishy going on between the two of them.

The girl's eyes rolled around, and she said: "Dr. Xu, do you and my cousin know each other? It feels like your relationship isn't ordinary?"

So she was his younger cousin. But the girl's question was overly bold and direct, leaving Xu Sui unable to handle it. She raised her eyes to look at Zhou Jingze, hoping he would do something.

Zhou Jingze had one hand in his pocket. Seeing Xu Sui at a loss with her cheeks flushing red, a teasing urge arose in him. He looked straight at Xu Sui, pressing the tip of his tongue against his lower jaw as he chuckled lowly, his tone loaded with meaning: "Why don't you tell her, what is our relationship, hmmm?"

It was as if whether it was ambiguous or romantic, he left it entirely for her to decide.

Because of his lazy, teasing posture, Xu Sui came to understand that a favored child of heaven like him probably would never understand what it felt like to genuinely love someone.

Perhaps he had never kept her in his heart to begin with.

Zhou Jingze had originally only wanted to make a joke, but the moment he said those words, he regretted it. Because he saw those clear, bright eyes of Xu Sui slowly growing moist.

A panic-like emotion spread from the depths of his heart, expanding endlessly. Zhou Jingze cleared his throat, intending to say something, when he saw Xu Sui blink. Her original emotions faded away completely, her gaze turned calm, and her tone candid:

"We don't know each other, nor do we have anything to do with each other."

Zhou Jingze saw the absolute resolution and decisiveness in the depths of her eyes. His heart was bound tightly by a fine thread in an indescribable, unexplainable feeling, and he finally realized.

The person before his eyes truly did not like him anymore.
