S.C.I. (Volume I) - Case 1: Chapter 5

The Digital Killer 05: Stalked

Upon leaving the funeral parlor, Bai Yutang called Gongsun Ce to inform him that they had found yet another deceased victim. Soon after, he and Zhan Zhao got into the car.

"Where to next?" Zhan Zhao flipped through the file containing the records of the taxi hit-and-run case.

"To the prison." Bai Yutang adjusted the angle of the rearview mirror. "Let's go have a chat with that crazy uncle."

"Wu Hao, forty-seven years old, spent over twenty years driving a taxi, married, has a nineteen-year-old daughter currently attending university..." Zhan Zhao closed the folder. "No matter how you look at it, this doesn't look like the life profile of a lunatic out to exact revenge on society."

"I heard that uncle staged a full-blown split personality act right there in court, so they sent him straight to a psychiatric hospital."

"A madman, a split personality, and a psychotic person are three completely different concepts!" Zhan Zhao tapped the dashboard. "You're speeding!"

"There's no difference to me. In your eyes, humans are divided into endless specific categories, but as far as I'm concerned, there are only two kinds: good guys and bad guys." As Bai Yutang spoke, he kept his eyes on the rearview mirror. "Do you get the feeling that the car behind us has been trailing us this whole time?"

Zhan Zhao was about to turn his head when Bai Yutang stopped him. "Don't look back! Look through here." With that, he adjusted the angle of the rearview mirror.

Peering through the mirror, Zhan Zhao spotted a black Honda keeping a distance of roughly three to four meters behind them. "I don't see anything unusual... Is this another one of your gut instincts?"

"I'm professionally trained, Cat." Bai Yutang raised an eyebrow, casting a meaningful glance toward Zhan Zhao's seatbelt.

"What are you planning?" Zhan Zhao grabbed his seatbelt warily, eyeing him sideways.

"Do you know what the fundamental difference between you and me is?" Bai Yutang smiled mischievously as he adjusted the mirror back to its original position. "You belong to the school of theory, whereas I... belong to the school of practical application!" The moment the words left his mouth, he slammed his foot on the accelerator.

The supreme engineering of the Spyker C8 manifested instantly. After effortlessly overtaking several cars, Bai Yutang dropped his speed back down to what it had been a moment ago. Before long, that same black Honda materialized behind them once more.

"Hmph, hmph..." Bai Yutang raised his eyebrows at Zhan Zhao with a look of supreme smugness.

"It truly is a sixth sense that borders on animalistic." Zhan Zhao re-adjusted the mirror back to an angle where he could see clearly. "I've noted the license plate and the vehicle model. Should we have someone run a check?"

"It's guaranteed to be a fake." Bai Yutang picked up his sunglasses and slid them on. "Hold on tight, Cat!"

"What are you doing?" Zhan Zhao grabbed the handle on the car ceiling. "Maybe they just admire your car and want to take a picture with it."

"Generally speaking, I ignore stalkers whose motives are unclear."

"You say that as if people stalk you all the time." Zhan Zhao curled his lip, tightening his grip on his seatbelt.

"They absolutely do! I am very popular!" Bai Yutang emphasized. "But they all lack basic common sense!"

"Meaning what??"

"You need to understand that even on a highway, it is physically impossible for anyone to keep up with a fighter jet pilot!!" Having delivered his line, he buried his foot into the accelerator once again.

Bai Yutang's reckless speeding persisted all the way to the prison gates. By the time the two stepped out of the car, the space behind them was entirely empty.

"How did that feel?" Bai Yutang wore a face full of unspent adrenaline. "Now that is how driving is supposed to be!"

Zhan Zhao remained unimpressed. "I strongly recommend you purchase a few more insurance policies. Your behavior indicates that you are still deeply intoxicated by the sense of superiority you enjoyed back when you were a pilot. This serves as textbook proof that your social role alignment is severely warped."

"Sigh..." Bai Yutang let out a heavy sigh. He reached out and snapped his fingers, drawing Zhan Zhao's gaze forward. "Look over there!! Cat! Look over there!"

The towering, imposing gates of the prison stood right before them. Bai Yutang continued, "The subject of your study is right in there! Go inside and unleash your overabundant desire for analysis on him! Stop treating me like your psychological laboratory mouse!!"

"In point of fact, you are a white mouse!" Zhan Zhao quickened his pace to catch up with Bai Yutang as they walked into the prison together. "It is your manifest destiny!!”
